Looking in from outside, looking in from the inside: How our location influences the question we raise and how we answer them

From the point of view of Chinese foreign Sinologists represent the outside. In reality things are not that simple. Especially when we are discussing Chinese politics, from the perspective of certain people within Western society, Sinologists still represent the inside. Big politics is not an exception. Especially religious subjects are very sensitive. In this lecture I want to talk about how Western Sinologists talking about Chinese religion have what kind of problems in their point of departure (or point of view). I also want to talk about how what kind of problems in their point of departure (or point of view) Eastern (especially Mainland China and Taiwan) scholars. Apart from easy to imagine political issues, there are also some less easily noticeable dimensions. Historical research destroy traditional views. I cam across this kind of issue when researching Lord Guan, the Falun Gong, as well as the deities of Fujian. The groups that we study do not necessarily like this. Our fields of study (methodologies) also requires us to use certain vocabulary that is not suitable. The concept of "religion" is one example, the terms "Buddhism" and "Daoism" are also good examples. This time I want to introduce the problems, but I do not necessarily have good solutions. Moreover, within each social and political context (discourse) there might be different solutions.
對中國人來説，外國漢學家代表外面。但實際上事情並沒有那麼簡單。特別是就現代中國政治而言，在西方社會的某些人看來，漢學家仍然代表裡面。大政治也不例外，特別是宗教方面很敏感。本次演講，我想談談西方漢學家在談論中國宗教時有什麼立場上的問題；也想談一談東方（特別是中國大陸和台灣）學者還有什麼立場的問題。除了很容易想像的政治問題外，還有一些不太容易被注意到的方面。歷史研究經常要打破傳統的看法。我在研究關公、法輪功、福建的神明時，都遇過這樣的問題。我們所研究的團體不見得喜歡。我們的研究領域（方法論）要求我們使用不符合現象的詞彙，像「宗教」的概念就是一個例子，「佛教」和「道教」也是很好的例子。這次我就要先介紹問題，但不見得會有很好的解決之道，而且每一個社會與政治環境也可能有不一樣的解決方案。
